Special Legislative Session
Mid-Decade Redistricting

Special Session of the Florida House of Representatives
  • What it is: An unprecedented attempt to redraw Florida’s congressional districts outside the normal census cycle, widely viewed as an effort to create additional and stronger Republican-leaning districts.

  • When: April 27-May 1, 2026, in Tallahassee.

  • Who decides: The Florida Legislature controls the process, with limited checks beyond possible court challenges.

  • Why it matters: Redrawing maps mid-decade undermines fair representation and risks manipulating congressional district lines for partisan advantage rather than population changes.

  • How it moves forward: Lawmakers introduce and approve new maps. There will be limited public input. There will probably be litigation. If approved, the districts will likely be used in the 2026 mid-term elections.
